Women's work remains at home

It has been a quarter century since the new millennium, yet women’s workforce participation is about the same as in 2000. Is the government unwilling to subsidise maternity benefits, or are companies reluctant to hire women regardless? Are men still resistant to sharing childcare and domestic responsibilities? And if more women do enter the workforce, will it enhance independence and living standards—or only double their burdens and make single-income households untenable?
