A fortnight ago the Sunday Times reported "growing household distress and a silent debt crisis spreading across the financial system" on the back of rising gold loans. However, the Central Bank's Financial Stability review noted improvements in general loan repayments. What's really driving pawning growth: economic distress or higher gold prices?
