Let’s not pretend, we haven’t been to half the *viharas* young Dalrymple gushes about in his gorgeously informative [post](https://travelsofsamwise.substack.com/p/the-last-kings-of-lanka?r=3h4jn&utm%5Fmedium=ios&triedRedirect=true) on Kandyan art. We hadn’t even heard of half of them. It’s a tad embarrassing that we need a chap called Sam to tell us the lore of our land. But there is hope. Tyrronne Devotta, [reporting from RavanaCon](https://community.lk/history/502-beyond-demon-or-king-why-ravana-still-matters-in-sri-lanka?ref=examiner.media), on why Ravana still matters.

What *is* distressing are looming counter-terror laws. Ambika Satkunanthan says they’re a [facade of system change](https://www.ft.lk/columns/Protection-of-the-State-from-Terrorism-Bill-The-facade-of-System-Change/4-787594?ref=examiner.media), while Rohan Samarajiva argues it would be a colossal [economic own goal](https://www.dailymirror.lk/opinion/Prevention-of-terrorism-against-the-State-Bill/172-331559?ref=examiner.media). The Central Bank’s monetary policy review held interest rates [steady](https://www.cbsl.gov.lk/sites/default/files/cbslweb%5Fdocuments/press/pr/press%5F20260128%5FMonetary%5FPolicy%5FReview%5FNo%5F1%5F2026%5Fe%5FFz9j8.pdf?ref=examiner.media), even though the inflation remains below target. 

Parliament’s Speaker ruled that the Judicial Services Commission exercises judicial power. Sanjit Dias [disagrees](https://indconlawphil.wordpress.com/2026/01/26/notes-from-a-foreign-field-the-speaker-the-judicial-service-commission-and-judicial-independence-in-sri-lanka-guest-post/?ref=examiner.media), arguing it's a guarantor institution.
