*What to read*

“Nirvana can wait” says Gnanasara. Catch more of his gems in this [long-form piece](https://www.theguardian.com/news/2025/nov/25/the-dangerous-rise-of-buddhist-extremism-attaining-nirvana-can-wait?ref=examiner.media) on the rise of Buddhist extremism. It's based on a new book, *The Robe and the Sword: How Buddhist Extremism Is Shaping Modern Asia* (the title presumably borrowed from Leslie Gunawardene’s *Robe and Plough)*. Read a [mini-review](https://www.himalmag.com/newsletters/southasia-review-of-books-19-november-2025?ref=examiner.media) in *Himal’s Southasia Review of Books*, which also features a book on Tamil Buddhism.

*Polity* covers a story no one else has. A garment worker’s death during her shift at a Brandix factory in Seethawaka. The [article](https://polity.lk/ishankha-singha-arachchi-dying-for-the-target/?ref=examiner.media) claims the JMO’s cause of death was a lie, and the JMO is conflicted, having worked for Brandix before.

Following COVID and the economic crisis, food insecurity nearly tripled. More than half the households in the estates are food insecure, researchers [find](https://cgspace.cgiar.org/server/api/core/bitstreams/8e08b3a1-04f2-40aa-86e2-9debcd42cdec/content?ref=examiner.media). Northern farmers face challenges in accessing [agricultural extension services](https://cgspace.cgiar.org/server/api/core/bitstreams/2f93a6e2-ca62-4957-8d64-bb870bed768a/content?ref=examiner.media). Meghal Perera on [fisheries cold-chain](https://roadsides.webflow.io/articles/8248?ref=examiner.media) adaptation and subversion at the Peliyagoda fish market.

Two Observer Research Foundation papers related to Lanka, [one](https://www.orfonline.org/expert-speak/india-sri-lanka-economic-relations-the-rise-of-a-digital-and-financial-partnership?ref=examiner.media) is Anushka Wijesinha’s essay on Indo-Lanka digital connectivity and the [other](https://savearchive.zbw.eu/bitstream/11159/1105677/1/1940867894%5F0.pdf?ref=examiner.media) on Indian Ocean ports.

ICES booklets on the [experiences of the genderqueer](https://tr.ee/aTKSoZCubd?ref=examiner.media) and [women with disabilities](https://tr.ee/YFLhxys5Wj?ref=examiner.media) are out.
